![]() Open world, emergent gameplayĪn important change that's coming with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is that the series is moving to a fully open world. NDTV Gadgets spoke to Marcin Momot, Community Coordinator at Witcher's developers CD Projekt RED to get an inside look at the process of making a game like this one, and the challenges the studio faced along the way. Over the years there have been two main entries in the series and a slew of side-projects including a mobile game and a flash browser game, and the third and possibly final entry to the franchise is going to release in May 2015. What started as a book series has spawned a host of successful video games. Unlike other games, your choices don't boil down to good or evil options - the world of these games is far more nuanced, and you're only picking between shades of grey. The Witcher does this even better than games like Bioshock, and Mass Effect. In spite of a fairly linear narrative, the Witcher still does an excellent job of giving the player a lot of freedom - there are many times in the story where you have to make choices and the decisions aren't simple black and white either. What makes it different however, is that the tales weaved in these games have more in common with Game of Thrones than Tolkien's high fantasy epics. Taking place in a fantasy setting, it's similar on the surface to The Lords of The Rings. ![]() The games place you in the shoes of the Witcher - a monster hunter named Geralt. As in the two previous games in the series, Wild Hunt's missions offer a variety of difficult moral dilemmas, and the choices players make early in the game can have a dramatic effect on events much later in the story. The Witcher games see you switch from slicing monsters into pieces, to fast talking your way out of trouble. CD Projekt estimates the main storyline to last about 50 hours, with another 50 hours of gameplay coming in the form of leveled side quests. New witcher senses help gamers gain clues about their surroundings, new climbing mechanics let them clamber over rocky terrain, and they can still concoct potions and craft items to help them on their adventures.Wild Hunt features realistic weather patterns and day/night cycles, with some of the game's mythical beasts exhibiting wildly different behavior and abilities depending on the time of day. The tactical combat system finds Geralt using a variety of melee weapons, magic attacks, and ranged items like his new crossbow, and players can also engage in mounted combat, or use the environment to inflict damage. Only Geralt can halt their deadly progress.Players can freely explore vast environments, including bustling cities, dense forests, fetid swamps, open seas, and even underwater locales, with horses, sailboats, and a fast-travel system serving to help gamers cover long distances. The titular Wild Hunt refers to a mysterious group of deathly riders who are thought to steal people's spirits, incorporate the ill-gotten souls into their undead army, and then lay waste to large swaths of land. Gamers once again take control of Geralt of Rivia, a professional monster hunter with supernatural powers, and one of the last remaining witchers in the world. CD Projekt's fantasy RPG returns with a massive open world and fierce new protagonists capable of destroying whole settlements in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
